About Mustangs mend
Mustangs MEND is a registered 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization. We are currently located in Southern California in the beautiful Santa Clarita Valley. We facilitate the healing of both mustangs and survivors of trauma (and others) through the principles of Mindfulness, Empathy, Nurturing, and Dignity. Participants learn basic horse handling skills and then move through a process of gentling a wild mustang so that it will be best equipped to adapt to its new life in a human world. Participants will work closely with a mentor-trainer and process successes and difficulties throughout the gentling process. Both survivors and mustangs will learn how to heal and create connection to the world around them as a way of coping with previous trauma. Mustangs MEND believes that both horse and human will come out on the other side of this process with positive coping mechanisms and a new sense of leadership and healing.
MEND Principles
The founding principles behind Mustangs MEND program are as follows:
Our credo is to always honor these principles in everything we do at Mustangs MEND. We adhere to these founding principles to the best of our abilities in our interactions with both horses and humans. It is a way of being with one another and a way of honoring the amazing creature that is the mustang.
- Mindfulness: the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis (Merriam-Webster).
- Empathy: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner (Merriam-Webster).
- Nurturing: caring for and protecting someone or something while they are growing (Oxford).
- Dignity: the quality or state of being worthy, honored, or esteemed (Merriam-Webster).

Equine Care policies and procedures
Currently, Mustangs MEND follows the UC Davis Vet Med guidelines for equine rescues and sanctuaries as our manual for determining and maintaining the health, welfare, and quality of life of our equines. These guidelines can be found here: http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ceh/local_resources/pdfs/pubs-Sanctuary-bkm-sec.pdf
Intake: All equines are dewormed appropriately within 30 days of intake, unless otherwise advised by a veterinarian or the equine is not yet eating grain/gentled (in the case of wild horses). All equines are vaccinated with a 5-way vaccine (Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis, influenza due to type A2, rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1 & EHV-4), and tetanus) and boostered appropriately within 30 days of intake, unless otherwise advised by a veterinarian. All equines will be evaluated for hoofcare, nutrition, and dental needs upon intake. Mustangs MEND does NOT require a formal veterinary exam upon intake, unless an equine presents immediate need due to poor condition, illness, or injury. All equines coming from unknown facilities (auctions, killpens, etc.) will be quarantined a minimum of 30 days, or until symptoms of illness subside and the equine is no longer contagious (as determined by a veterinarian).
Euthanasia: Mustangs MEND will not allow an animal to suffer for any prolonged amount of time. We strongly believe in giving animals a dignified death using UC Davis approved methods for humane end of life. Euthanasia decisions are made by our facility director with consultation of the board of directors and veterinarians. Long term prognosis, cost of treatment, and current quality of life are all considerations we take when deciding on humane end of life procedures for an equine in our care.
Feed: Mustangs MEND practices free feeding of medium quality local grass hay, supplemented with alfalfa hay/pellets and daily vitamins and minerals for horses in good body condition. For horses in poor body condition, we adhere to UC Davis refeeding protocol for starved horses.
